Health Office Information
The health office at GHS is staffed with a RN and EMT. We are located right off the main office. The office hours are 7am to 3pm. If your child has to go home because of illness they are to be picked up at the health office by a parent or legal guardian. Absences must be called into the main office. Hopefully the following will answer some of your questions. If not, please feel free to call our office at 660-5328.
1. In accordance with NH Department of Education and GHS School policies:
- All prescription medication must be delivered to the school by an adult and be inthe original prescription bottle with no more than a one month supply. The medication is counted when it comes to school and at the end of each day. Written permission from the prescribing physician and parent must be supplied. We have a prescription medication permission form that is available from the health office and nurses website. Pharmacists are always happy to supply an extra prescription bottle for the school at your request. For short-term prescriptions such as antibiotics or pain medications, we can use the original prescription bottle as the physicians note; however we must have written parental permission to administer medications.
- We must have written parental permission to administer over the counter medications to a student. We have an over the counter medication permission form that will be sent out on the first day of school with other important forms or available in the health office or nurse website. We stock generic brands of Tylenol, Advil, Tums and various topical ointments. Any medications not listed on this form must be supplied by parent and delivered to the health office by a parent or responsible adult. Medications must be in the original container and we must have written parental permission to administer the medication. STUDENTS ARE NOT TO CARRY MEDICATION WITH THEM. The only exception are asthma inhalers, epipens and insulin and we have must a physicians order on file indicating the need for your child to carry these medications.
2. Immunization requirement: New Hampshire Law RSA 141-C:20 requires that all school children be adequately immunized. Verification of all required immunizations is mandatory for admittance and attendance at GAHS. A tetanus immunization is due every 10 years. This is usually done between the ages of 14 and 15. We will send a letter when your child is due for this immunization if we do not already have proof of this on file.
3. Students with a fever, vomiting, or any indication of a communicable disease/acute illness will be dismissed at the discretion of the school nurse. Any other dismissals for illness will be at the discretion of parent. Students with strep throat, ringworm, impetigo, conjunctivitis or other communicable disease must be out of school and on treatment for24 hours before returning to school.
4. Head lice: We have a nit free policy. If your child has head lice, please notify the health office so that we can check any other students who may have been exposed. The information will be kept confidential and will help us to keep the situation under control.
5. Any changes in emergency numbers or your childs health condition should be reported to the health office as soon as possible.
6. All medication forms are available for download on the SAU website or our nurseJennifer Wilsons website as well.
